3.Farmers can now keep a check on soil through 'Mannu App'.

On the occasion of 1000 days celebration of Kerala Government, the Soil Survey and Soil Conservation Department with Watershed Development Management Center organised an event having 'Mannu App' launch as its main highlight. Farmers can download this app from play store without paying any cost. On Mannu App all the information about soil like soil structure, nutrients, fertilisers, etc is mentioned in the Malayalam language. You can also check for the most suitable crop for your land-based on the soil quality, farm suitability and can also guide you about fertilisation like about different types of fertilisers and different methods of fertilisation.

As the Kerala state is naturally rich that's what makes it perfect for high yield of crops. And this goal can be easily achieved by focussing on the increment of soil moisture. In the event, the Watershed Development Management Center has supported the construction of affordable water-shed which will help to enhance the groundwater level in Kerala.

4. Vertical Farming.

World’s Population Rise has always been a concern and to feed them is even a bigger problem. Due to irresistible modernization and Industrial Development, we are losing our cultivable land and to come up with modern solutions has become the need of the time. Vertical Farming is the practice of growing crops in layers one above the other. It is often practiced in buildings, offices, and shipping containers. Its main advantage is that the crop yield is increased with a smaller land area required. Climate change also does not affect the crops much as the crops are usually indoors. Bowery Farming is one such practice in which crops are grown under LED lights. Ideas are being put forward to build skyscrapers with vertical farming that can feed up to 50,000 people. Vertical Farming has an additional advantage that any variety of plants can be grown together as the crops do not share the same land. It is also less disruptive to plants and animals also as their habitat is not being disturbed.

5. Prerequisites of Farming

If you are rearing your head in the arena of farming then there are some points that you must keep in mind to become successful in your endeavours. Proper knowledge of farming techniques, use of chemicals and fertilizers will help you to get a high jump in less time.

So, below is a list of some chemicals along with their usage:

Magnesium: The leaves become older and yellow in colour in the wake of magnesium deficiency, to get rid of this issue you should add 30g of magnesium sulfate to the soil.

Turmeric: In order to get deprived of whiteflies and other water-born insects, turmeric will help you.

Boron: If the shape of the buds is deforming and leaves are rolling then you must ensure that there is a deficiency of Boron. Mix 2g Boron in 1 litre of water and sprinkle it.

Pseudomonus  Fluorescence: This quirky bacterium kills all the undesirable things and produces enzymes and hormones that provide strength and growth to a plant.

Vermicompost: It has an accumulation of several necessary elements. It contains 9 elements out of those 16 that are required for adequate growth of a plant.

Neem oil and Soap: The mixture of Neem oil and Soap can be used to kill white insects that hinders the growth of your plant.

So, these are some significant ways that you can use to have a good yield. The measurement should be done very cautiously otherwise can give you the opposite results.

6. Pokkah Beong: The Coronavirus of crops.

While Coronavirus is at the peak farmers are already suffering from loss of income and danger of lives but trouble don’t end here as their crops are facing the danger of Pokkah Beong.

Pokkah Beong is an airborne fungal disease that affects the roots or base of the crops and makes them yellowish tinge in colour. It is caused by Fusarium monoliforme, and Fusarium subglutinans that severely damage the crops resulting in a bad yield.

Farmers in Uttar Pradesh are especially worried about sugarcane as it promises good yields and high revenues but Pokkah Beong may result in damaging of crops. According to the research “Pokkah Beong: An Emerging Disease of Sugarcane” it causes 1-90% damage to the crops and its cases are reported in many states like Maharashtra, Punjab etc. including Uttar Pradesh.

As with time this fungal disease has became more resistant to external factors like high temperature and to save their crops from Pokkah Beong farmers are advised to spray pesticides on their crops as soon as the any symptoms like distortion or rotting of the apical part of the stalk appears.

Pokkah Beong may be a threat to crop but early and adequate measures like spraying pesticides can save the crops from damage.
