3.TOMATO CULTIVATION

Tomato is an annual or short-lived perennial pubescent herb. The major tomato producing states are Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Assam.

Well-drained, sandy or red loam soils rich in organic matter with a pH range of 6.0-7.0 are considered as ideal for growing tomatoes. Tomato is a warm-season crop.  It requires a low to medium rainfall.  Raised beds are necessary to avoid the problem of waterlogging in heavy soils. Seeds are sown in June July for autumn-winter crop and for spring-summer crop seeds are sown in November.

The field is ploughed to a fine tilth by giving four to five ploughing with a sufficient interval between two ploughings.

Spacing. The field should be kept weed-free, especially in the initial stage of plant growth, as weeds compete with the crop and reduce the yield drastically.

The tomato should not be grown successively on the same field and a break of at least one year is required between the planting of tomatoes or other Solanaceous crops, cucurbits and many other vegetables. Tomato is very sensitive to water application. Heavy irrigation provided after a long spell of drought causes cracking of the fruits. Hence it should be avoided. Light irrigation should be given 3-4 days after transplanting. Irrigation intervals should be according to soil type and rainfall. Flowering and fruit development are the critical stages of tomato therefore; water stress should not be given during this period.

4.Good monsoon has led to a 10% increase in land under cultivation this year

In amidst of this Coronavirus crisis agriculture sector has shown a positive growth as the area under the cultivation has gone up by 10% this year hence, resulting in a total of 90% usage of cultivation land in the country. Good monsoon rainfall this year has been a big factor behind this growth.

As these farm activities are totally dependent on monsoon rainfall they slowed down in July due to a decrease in rainfall but from the past week, they have again shown growth as monsoon revived. This good rainfall has led to 17.36% increase in land under rice cultivation and 15.50% land under oilseeds.

5.Field trial for Bt Brinjal in India

Alliance for Agri Innovation, AAI urges the central government and state governments to grant permission for field trial of Bt Brinjal in India. To seek attention in the matter, the organisation also wrote letters to the chief ministers of several states.

The field trial event already got approval from the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) in May 2020.

Need to grow Bt Brinjal

According to the Directorate General of AAI, "Brinjal is one of the most pesticide consuming crops among vegetables." On average, a farmer has to spray pesticides for  25 times in a single season. Because Brinjals are more prone to pests. Also, the infected caterpillars from Brinjal go into the farmer's home creating more danger to them. Bt technology will save farmers from all these hardships. Moreover, it will help them to increase their income as they have to spend less on pesticides. Also, the less use of pesticides will keep soil health good and preserve the environment from the dire consequences of pesticides.

6. The food Secretary asked the government for the extension of the sugar buffer stock subsidy scheme.

In 2018 sugar buffer stock subsidy scheme was announced to provide some stability to the sugar mills. But recently the scheme ended on 31 July under which the government has paid  Rs.1,674 crore to sugar mills for a buffer stock of 4 million. The food Secretary has mentioned that the Niti Ayog task force has sent a special report to the PM office regarding the scheme which includes 12 recommendations related to it. But the final decision regarding the scheme will be taken by the cabinet. As this year due to lower sugarcane production, the sugar production has declined by 18% from 2019-20. So, the conditions appear to be positive for sugar mills.
